The American LeMans race series ends with Petit LeMans, a 1,000 mile/10 hour race at Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA. The event runs from 28 Sep - 1 Oct 2011.

American LeMans racing, like its French patriarch, is in the form of a long race that features four classes of cars competing on the same track at the same time. There are six races going on at once; the overall race between all classes and the five individual class races. It is a fast-paced motor sport and race fans have to stay sharp to follow the action.

Introduction to American LeMans

Unlike NASCAR, where the cars race in an oval and only make left-hand turns, American LeMans is staged at twisting and winding road-style tracks where the speeds reach in excess of 200 mph on straight-aways and slow down to the low double digits on very tight corners, all within a few seconds.

The appeal of American LeMans (ALM) racing is of course the sleek and fast cars. The excellent drivers vie for points and bragging rights. The ALM season runs from March to October each year. The teams travel around the United States to compete on a different course every few weeks.

ALM Race Cars

ALM is much different than other forms of American racing. For starters, there are several car classes in the race:

  • LMP 1
  • LMP 2
  • LMPC
  • GT-AM
  • GTC

Each of these vehicle classes is designed for specific functions of speed, maneuverability, and endurance. It is always a treat to watch four racing classes competing on the same field. There is a lot of race action happening. Six (6) races are occurring at the same time!

The drivers come from all over the world to compete in the ALM series. These drivers are among the best in the world. It is amazing how well they can handle their high-performance technological driving machines.

Race Day Coverage

The ALM season closes out with Petit LeMans, which is a 1,000 mile/10 hour endurance race. The 2011 season ends at Road Atlana in Braselton, GA at the end of the Petit LeMans 2011 schedule.

If you are not familiar with ALM, you can get a crash course at ALM 101 paddock.

The 1 Oct 2011 race will be televised on ABC 4-6 PM Eastern US and ESPN 3 (starting at 11:15 AM) on Sun 2 Oct 2011. Diehard ALM fans on race day can monitor the live scoring to follow their favorite driver and sworn enemies in the race. Check your local television programming listings.

Unfortunately, there is limited television viewing audience interest in ALM racing. The televised races are usually edited and compressed.into a much shorter time frame than the entire race. The major networks usually show highlights first, then televise the live race in the final hour or so. The 2011 Petit LeMans is being televised the day after the race. It will be basically a highlight reel.

If you never saw an ALM race before, the Petit LeMans is a great introduction to the sport. Even though it is the last race of the season, it may spark your interest in following the 2012 season when the action returns in the Spring.
